A tragic train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and execution of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine what caused this incident,” stated the head of state.
The official announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The leader stated plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the former leader, whose term finished the year before. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's economic vision for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a significant expansion of its duties in national infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously sparked significant concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an prior crash this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an urgent halt in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was requested until the completion of a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "demands prompt explanations."
In reaction, the national leader maintained that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these strategic projects.
