The Former President's Woke Alarm Overlooks The Continent's Real Threat: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's security policy document offers a flawed assessment of the European Union. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and so-called "woke" policies pose an grave risk to the continent's identity. Yet, this perspective is based on a serious misreading of the situation. The true danger confronting Europe is not societal but economic and technological backwardness.

The Stark Growth Gap Between the US and Europe

Statistics paint a sobering contrast. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by eighty-seven percent, while a mere thirteen and a half percent growth for the EU. During this period, European income per person dropped from over three-quarters to just half of the US level. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now has a higher per capita income than several leading European economies like Italy and France.

Today, roughly 50% of the world’s 50 largest technology firms are US-based, while only four are from Europe.

The Technological Deficit: The Core Problem

This widening disparity is driven by stronger productivity growth in the United States, largely due to breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The scene of global tech dominance is decidedly American. In the last fifty years, 241 US firms have scaled into companies valued at over ten billion dollars, compared with just 14 in the European continent.

This disparity prompts a vital question: In the race for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, where does Europe positioned? Most analysts concede it is essentially a two-horse race between the US and China, with European nations starting at a clear handicap.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Innovation Gap

Several key factors explain this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a far deeper and more dynamic system for funding startups. The EU still lacks a true unified investment market, a factor that caps the scale of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided rules hamper European business. A US startup can launch a product under one regulatory framework to access a market of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a larger population size, is split among 27 separate systems, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was once met with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's long-term lack of spending in defense has eroded its capacity for pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Hopefulness

In spite of these challenges, one can find reasons for optimism. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have begun to propose substantial change. Key reports on EU competitiveness and the internal market highlight the need for major changes.

Given appropriate policies and regulatory reforms, these assets might enable far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent still possesses considerable advantages: skilled human capital, top-tier education systems, and world-class labs. Alongside a large internal market and high savings rates, these foundations have the potential to unleash a surge of venture creation.

Crucially, even if the EU does not take the lead in creating next-generation tech, it can still dramatically increase productivity by implementing and tailoring innovations from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

Europe now stands at a critical crossroads. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, Europe's slide in innovation has been steady. But, without decisive action to address its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could give way to a sudden and irreversible decline in world influence.
