"When are you speaking to the band?" an inquiry reads. "I wanted to ask if I can become their fourth member."

There is only a single issue: The sender also longs to be the Haims' additional sibling. What's more, we are in plentiful company. A host of famous fans have openly begged for the honor.

One thing is obvious a special quality is at play. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana began their career playing gigs at neighborhood delis with their family. Today, they are repeated Grammy contenders.

Similar to the best groups, they're a inseparable gang. Their videos frequently feature them walking in unison down the streets of Los Angeles. During performances, they perform with such pure exuberance you inevitably think, "I'd love to be part of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that young girls came up to us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I bought a drum kit'," states Alana, the youngest of the sisters. "That's the greatest compliment. That is recognition in itself. We have succeeded if we can inspire others to start a band."

Grammy Milestone

The trio are speaking from home, where they're resting up after an lengthy tour in for their fourth album, I Quit.

They're presently processing the news it's been shortlisted for Best Rock Album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the pioneering all-woman band ever in contention for the trophy.

"I tune into the lists every year, so it almost feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is called," says Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this right or am I dreaming'?"

The weight of the nomination is deeply felt by the sisters.

"We really set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a significant step," adds Alana. "However we're just thankful for the female artists that paved the way."

Personal Turmoil and Candor

The album was born from a period of transition. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music explores that odd in-between place where you're relieved to be free, but not entirely ready to start anew.

The lyrics follow departures and goodbyes. The sisters want love, but not the specific love they've got. You can hear them figuring out in real life who they want to be.

"That's a perfect way of putting it, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is like a slogan. You have to actively work on ignoring the outside opinions and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Development of Style

That recent resilience demanded a new sound – more organic and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that started with the percussion.

"The drum sound is such a nuanced thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our memoir," jokes Alana. "I always say, our albums cannot begin until we find the perfect drum sound."

Experiences and Shared Humor

The band's candor inspired the album's marketing, where the sisters shared some of their romantic misadventures.

Someone broke up with Este over a health consideration. Alana shared a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"Experiencing these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no hope," explains Alana. "Thus to be able to share those stories and hear others tell you more outrageous stories, it's incredible."

A Confident Future

You can clearly sense a shift in the band. Today, Haim are more confident of their place in the rock pantheon.

They're major draws, with successful albums and an global audience.

But the sister act will forever be their number one focus.

"Me and my siblings have been performing since I was four," shares Alana. "It feels as if no alternative that we were supposed to do. And I'm really grateful we've gotten here and we're still going strong."
